Chassis & Suspension

The new BMW ALPINA D5 S is fitted with the latest suspension technologies which offer a broad spectrum of driving experiences.

Electronically controlled dampers developed together with ThyssenKrupp-Bilstein are sportive by default and offer a pronounced range of adjustment in compression and rebound. Using the Driving Experience Control the driver can select a number of modes, including Sport+ Mode for maximum dynamics or Comfort+ Mode for all-out ride-comfort. Shorter and stiffer springs bring about overall sharper handling and have the added benefit of lowering the centre of gravity whilst improving aerodynamics. The Touring variant of the new BMW ALPINA D5 S features a rear-axle air suspension which ensures a neutral ride height and balanced handling characteristics regardless of loads.

In combination with new ALPINA CLASSIC 20“ forged wheels, the Pirelli Ultra-High-Performance tyres provide excellent handling in any driving situation.

Tires from Pirelli were last fitted to a BMW ALPINA in 1985, but their engineers convinced ALPINA to rekindle the cooperation more than thirty years later. The new BMW ALPINA D5 S comes equipped with super high performance tires measuring 255/35 ZR20 at the front and 295/30 ZR20 (Touring: 285/30 ZR20) at the rear*. These “ALP” labelled Pirelli P Zero tires were explicitly developed in accordance to ALPINA’s requirements with regards to dynamics and comfort. Combining motorsport technology with a flat shoulder contour and an innovative tread pattern facilitates high lateral loads and precise steering feeling without compromising wet handling.

* EU-tyre label: E / B /  74 dB front, E / B /  74 dB rear.

ALPINA Sport Plus suspension package

The new BMW ALPINA D5 S is optionally available with an ALPINA Sport Plus suspension package – this comprises Integral Active Steering (rear-wheel steering) and active roll stabilisation (Dynamic Drive). The electromechanical rear-wheel steering system allows the rear wheels to apply up to a maximum of 2.5 degrees of steering angle – either in opposite direction to the front wheels at low speed for more agility, or in the same direction as the front wheels at higher speeds for improved stability. The active roll stabilisation uses electronic actuated stabilisers and effectively eliminates body roll during dynamic cornering – it is specifically adapted to the BMW ALPINA D5 S’s suspension kinematics and light-weight 20” wheel and tire set-up.

Every BMW ALPINA automobile offers high levels of comfort, dynamics and equally important very neutral handling characteristics which translate into stability and a high-degree of safety even when driving at higher speeds.

The electronic driving stability control systems are specifically configured for each specific BMW ALPINA model, taking into account a plethora of influencing parameters, in order to ensure that the high power and torque are transferred to the road safely and effectively.

The influence of the aerodynamic properties of a vehicle on driving stability is of particular importance, especially at higher speeds. Based on the principle ‘Form Follows Function‘, the aerodynamic components such as the front and rear spoilers are specifically designed to work together in order to achieve the maximum possible reduction in lift and thus ensure very neutral handling.

High performance brakes

The brake system of the BMW ALPINA D5 S is sourced from the 330 km/h fast BMW ALPINA B5 Bi-Turbo. It consists of four-piston fixed brake callipers with 395 mm discs on the front axle and floating brake callipers with 398 mm discs and an electromechanical parking brake on the rear axle. At additional costs, especially sportive drivers can choose an optional brake system which combines light-weight drilled composite discs with high performance brake pads for even more fading resistance under very demanding thermodynamic loads.

New test procedure WLTP

Stated fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are measured pursuant to EU Regulation 715/2007 in its applicable version. From 1st of September 2018 the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) has replaced the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Regardless of the applied test procedure, it is currently still mandatory to state fuel consumption and CO2 emissions according to NEDC, hence stated values are determined based on the WLTP test procedure and are converted to NEDC for comparison purposes. Depending on your country, vehicle related taxes or other duties may be based on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions data which differs from that stated here. The provision of additional fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as determined according to WLTP is currently voluntary until their provision becomes mandatory by law.

Further information on specific fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of new passenger cars is provided by the ‚Leitfaden über den Kraftstoffverbrauch, die CO2-Emissionen und den Stromverbrauch neuer Personenkraftwagen‘ which can be obtained free of charge at all points of sale and from the Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH (DAT) or online
